This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. The obvious and direct reality that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months.
